England's Joe Root drives on his way to an impressive 98 on day one of the first Test at Lord's against New Zealand


  • England are 354 for 7 after a mammoth recovery on the first day of their two Test series 
  • Jos Buttler out LBW for 67 with the last ball of the day with Moeen Ali not out on 49 at stumps
  • Joe Root was out for 98 and Ben Stokes dismissed for 92 after England slumped to 30 for four in first session
  • New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and ordered Alastair Cook and England to bat first 
  • Mark Wood and Adam Lyth presented with Test caps by Andrew Strauss after being named to debut  

  • Joe Root and Ben Stokes were instrumental in an England resurgence on day one at Lord's, rescuing the hosts from a dire situation at 30 for four after Alastair Cook lost the toss and was sent in to bat. 
    While Root and Stokes will be frustrated at not converting their innings into hundreds, England again have their middle order to thank for being in a far stronger position than they could have been at 354 for seven at the close of play.
    Jos Buttler's LBW dismissal by Trent Boult with the final ball of the day put a dampener on what ended a good first day of the two Test series.Ben Stokes formed an imposing partnership with Root but the all-rounder was also dismissed short of his century on 92
